Pool Sweeping
-
“Hello Friends.
My name is Dogentricks.com and I’m here to tell you about the best band you’ve never heard of. SUPERCAR is more myth than legend – after breaking up several years ago, their flawless record remains as a pristine gem among the Indie scene in Japan. I discovered SUPERCAR 7 years ago while I was sweeping a pool.
“”We’ll be out of town for a week. We’d love it if you could sweep our pool once a day during the absence,”" said Mr. Bishop. “”We’ll pay you $100 for the job – Just sweep away the dust that accumulates towards the deep end.”"
“”Sure,”" I thought to myself. “”Good pay, good weather, nice chance to relax.”" For seven days I picked up a 9 foot broom and swept the dust from the deep end of the Bishop’s pool. This surprisingly awkward task ended up taking around an hour and a half each day. After noticing my escalating boredom, I walked home, grabbed my walkman, 2 new unopened CDs, jogged back to the Bishops house and plugged in my headphones.
2 compilation albums: Japan for Sale, Vol. 2 and 3. I began to sweep while anxiously listening to the new foreign albums. You know the feeling – there’s always at least 1 great song on a CD. I patiently listened while peacefully scraping dirt from the Bishop’s pool. It finally came – SUPERCAR – YUMEGIWA LAST BOY.
You’ve never heard this song, but let me tell you it is easily the most fitting piece of pool sweeping music there is. Pool sweeping is a bit like waxing the deck or painting the fence – a simple physical task that will gently sooth your body and allow your mind to wander where it needs to be. YUMEGIWA LAST BOY is the song that provides the visual imagery necessary for that foreign place to come alive.
I ended up putting it on repeat for 7 days straight – I still haven’t got to the end of Japan for Sale, Vol. 2. Vol 3. is picking up dust because due to the lack of SUPERCAR.
Unforunately, 7 years ago wasn’t entirely friendly to a Seattle based audience trying to get their hands on the indie Jpop scene. After several weeks of searching, I gave up searching and let SUPERCAR become the mysterious pool sweeping band of my youth.
Enter Tokyo, 2008. I met a guy a few days ago at school and had a suprising deep conversation concerning the disappointing Indie Scene in Japan. Along the way, Nozomi mentioned SUPERCAR and nearly fell over in a wave of nostalgia while remembering the good old days of pool sweeping. “”I’ll lend you their CD,”" said Nozomi. “”They’re pretty damn amazing.”"
I’m currently listening to SUPERCAR and writing this because you should be too. Grab a broom, find a pool and enjoy:
