Update in Progress.By Dogen on December 29, 2008 | 19 Comments
Update in progress. Dogentricks.com will be in update purgatory for the next week or so, as I’m currently taking care of my beloved 晋也くん in the midsts of the overhaul. Small changes should occur daily, but I’ll make another announcement when things are completely done. Feel free to leave a comment right here on the main page – one of the excellent new functions. Thanks for the support!
For the time being, check out the new sampler:

Halloween RecapBy Dogen on November 1, 2008 | No Comments
Hello friends and family. This is dogentricks.com.
Yesterday I celebrated All Hallows Eve with old friends and new acquaintances. Old friends being fraternity brothers:

All of those about to criticize my un-original ninja outfit, I will have you know that it was AMAZINGLY creative. I was a professional ninja – i.e. more than the black mask I was wearing, the finely tailored black coat was the centerpiece to the outfit. As for the newbs (acquaintances), check out my new best friends at UW:

秋祭りBy Dogen on October 23, 2008 | No Comments
Hello friends. Many of you may remember a post I made just over a year ago about the Keio Aki Matsuri. Basically a ton of insane dancers – all of which are students of Keio University – floored me with their abilities. This year, my good friend Mami, who is also a great dancer, participated, and this is her dance. Enjoy!

YES.By Dogen on October 20, 2008 | No Comments
Who hasn’t drank Soda in 2 months, has a warm heart and bright future? THIS GUY:
This man is Rodger, aka Tokyo Swan. He is the nicest person in the universe and one of my best friends. I lived next to Swan for 6 months during my stay at the international dorm in Shin Kawasaki, Kanagawa, JAPAN. Rodger knows more personal things about me than anyone, period. On top of that, he lives in a place famous for cereal – MICHIGAN.
What isn’t there to like about Tokyo Swan? Nothing. I love him. Which is why I am recommending his new blog to all of you.
Read, and be merry.

The last major blog for this site was written on Northwest Air 17, Tokyo to Seattle, more than 2 months ago. I’ve been dying to write lately and get my head on straight after a series of significant circumstances.
Hello friends, Dogentricks.com here. I am back in America and this is what I think.
There are a lot of overweight people here. There are a lot of people here that do not care what they look like when they go outside. Fascinating. Although I disapprove of tipping the scale, having the balls to dress like a bulls-eye for harassment is respectable in it’s own right and something I saw very little of in Japan. Though I do miss the beautiful people all the time, everywhere.
I miss Japanese food. But I also love my current diet and wouldn’t change it for anything. Everything that passes through the morphing hole in my face is small on the wallet, big in quantity, and organic. There is a world class gym 10 minutes from my house, when I walk slowly. I pay 15 dollars a month for membership. The gumby green grass that lines UW is soft and free to trick/frisbee/pigskincatch on. Without any doubt, it is easier to live as an athlete in America. Though, I wish I had some ramen.
I have my pace. I have plenty of time to do the things I want and meet the people I need to see. There is no 60 minute commutes to school; there is no meeting in downtown Shibuya just for a coffee. My friends are all within a very large jump of me, all the time. I can lie down in the quad and listen to music with a friend or run around in circles screaming without a second glance from anyone. I chose to do what I want, when I want – because I have that luxury. I walked home last night at 4:30 AM without anyone batting an eye. Though, I am a bit unsure as to why I was walking around at 4:30 in the morning.
People here are loud. The volume is irritating, but it is refreshing to hear the rainbow of opinions which shade the late night talks that occur every day. People are not afraid to argue and stand up for their beliefs. Though, I do miss the virtue of patience.
People here study what they want to, and they do it with passion. I love it.
These are flakes of the limitless culture nuances I have noticed and for a very long time took for granted. More than anything else, America lives up to it’s reputation: free. We are a country of people full of dreamers, full of couch potatoes, and full of diversity. We are not a country of full of followers, full of uniformity, and full of teamwork.
This is how I view the world around me. Regardless of this, the borders of a country and the culture that comes when you cross them bear no relevance to the kindness of the people that live there. Be it the land of the free or the land of the rising sun, there exists kind, beautiful people living and helping others. Kindness over culture.
Enough of the ridiculousity.
I live with 3 great roommates in a wonderful apartment. I love it. I am taking all classes related to Japanese. My first period is Modern Japanese Literature – straight up Japanese novels. Extremely challenging, but extremely fun. I love it. I am training all the time and feeling the transformations surface on my body and mind. I love it.
I am single. Risa and I broke up and this blog will not go into the details.
I hang out with exchange students almost every single day and feel that my Japanese is still improving, albeit at a slower rate. They remind me of my passion for Japanese language, culture, and fried octopus balls.
I am planning on putting more work into this site in the near future, but for today, my time is up.
train hard.

Friends and family. Boys and girls. Peanut butter and jelly. Thank you for your support. My name is Dogentricks.com and this is my life.
3 days ago a man by the name of DK privileged me with a visit to Seattle. If you don’t know much about DK, allow me to make a short introduction.
As you can see, he’s a gorilla. Luckily he’s a gorilla who’s great at writing. Here’s my take on the past two days, written through DK’s words.
I was a little nervous before i met Dan. I mean, this is the first guy that has come to meet ME from this awesome sport and community. In my forums, he is an icon, and meeting any icon is a bit nerve racking.
Another thought was agitating me also: We’ve all seen the pics, we’ve all read the posts; we think we know what the man Dan is like in person, but truthfully, personality cannot be accurately measured by what we see in 10 minute video blogs. What if Dan is everything we hope he isn’t?
Let me set the record straight right now:
Dan is one of the nicest, coolest, most interesting, inspirational people I have EVER met. EVER. In my short 20 years I have never met anyone who could inspire as much confidence at such a young age. I’ll get more into why i think so later, but for now settle for the statement that Dan reaks of awesomeness.
I picked up Dan and we drove to a park with purrrrrrrfect grass. You couldn’t find nicer grass on a World Cup soccer pitch. There, we met Rizzice (yes, THE Rizzice) and another tricker named Zack. And then the fun began.
Watching Dan trick is like watching a new artist paint. I know this is sounds a bit cliche, but i picked this simile for a reason. Artists paint and draw for a variety of reasons, but new artists paint for one reason alone: they love painting and they want to try new things. Thats it. Im sure they would like some recognition for their good work, but it is not an increadable misfortune if that doesnt happen immediately. Like the artist, Dan tricks because he loves tricking, regardless of experience.
Dan loves tricking and is dedicated to improvement. You cant really grasp the scope of that statement until you actually meet, talk to, and trick with him, but when you do, you realize that Dan loves tricking more than he loves air to breath. Even though Dogentricks.com can through some tricks that Dan cant do yet, I couldn’t stop watching Dan because he put so much heart into every single kick and twist; Dan commits mind, body, and soul to tricking. It was phenomenal. It was inspirational. And it was very intimidating. Coming from a guy who only picked up the sport 4 years ago and really hasn’t trained or improved a great deal in that time period, i kinda feel like a poser. I like tricking, I think tricking is a ton of fun and i want to get better at it.
Is this going to stop me from training? Two words: HELL NO. If anything, this trip has affirmed every reason why I trick and totally strengthened my resolve to continue. The fire has been lit under my ass, and I am now super motivated to kick my training into high gear and start down this road in earnest.
Dan, I told you the next time we tricked, i would be better. I meant it.
Until we meet again.
